Safe Routes to School
Traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for children in the City of Los Angeles. SRTS brings traffic-safety improvements to the streets of your school neighborhood and safety education to your school community. We partner with parents/guardians, school staff, and community members to develop a Safe Routes to School Plan to help reduce collisions involving youth, and enhance the safety and comfort of our students who walk and bike to school. Students who travel safely to school are more likely to arrive ready to learn, and research shows that students who walk to school are more prepared than those who arrive by car.
Walking Safety Assessment
A WSA is the first step in a two-part SRTS Plan process. A WSA brings the school community together to walk in your school neighborhood and identify the barriers and challenges to walking and biking safely to school. Your input will help us customize the street improvements and safety education plan.

Safe Routes to School is a core part of the Vision Zero Los Angeles initiative. The focus of Vision Zero is to protect our most vulnerable road users, including children, older adults, and people walking and bicycling. Children and seniors account for nearly 50% of people killed on our streets who were walking or bicycling. The Vision Zero goal is to eliminate all traffic deaths by 2025.
